Known by most as simply the 'Brummie' the Birmingham Road
End is
the traditional stand for the home fans at the Hawthorns.
The stand as it is now took around eight months to build and was
opened on
Boxing Day 1994 for the League One encounter against Bristol City.
Following the Hillsborough disaster, the
club needed to move towards the creation of an all-seater stadium so
the terracing at the Birmingham Road and Smethwick Ends were replaced
by two new stands, completed for the 1994-95 season at a combined
cost of £4.15 million, though roughly half of that figure
(£2,097,000) was funded by the Football Trust.
The new Birmingham Road Stand was initially known as the
Apollo 2000 stand due to a sponsorship deal with a local electrical
appliance dealer. The current capacity is over 8,000 compared to the
14,000 the terrace one it replaced.
History
Originally built as a terrace, it wasn't
until 1964 that the roof off the
old Handsworth side stand (The Rainbow Stand now the East Stand) was
transferred over to cover the Birmingham Road Stand.
It was the 1993/94 season that saw the terrace used for the last time
for
the then League One game against Grimsby Town on the 30th April.
