Biography Jonathan Greening signed for Albion in
July 2004 for an initial fee of £1.25 million from Middlesbrough and
settled into the club from the off making 34 (2 as sub) Premiership
appearances to help Albion pull off the Great Escape at the end of
the season, the following year 2005/06 'Jonno' was named Albion’s
Player of the Year missing only one game as the club were sadly
relegated from the top division.
Jonathan is an attacking midfielder who can play anywhere along the
midfield line looking comfortable in any of the positions, one of his
main strengths is the quality of crosses he can supply after
tormenting defenders with his trickery. Although not a consistent
goalscorer for Albion, his goals come into the memorable category,
the most memorable to Baggies fans will be his goal against local
rivals Wolves in the 3-0 victory in October 2006, a fantastic strike
from 20 yards out.
His career began at York City whom he joined in 1996 playing 26
league games (2 goals) before a £1m move to Manchester United in
March 1998 where he was recognised by England at Under 21 level
making 10 appearances, his highlight at Old Trafford was making the
substitutes bench for the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final which
United won 2-1 after being 1-0 down, with players like Scholes, Giggs,
Beckham and Keane at United, Jonathan's appearances were restricted,
he made only 27 appearances in his three years at the club. In the
Summer of 2001, he moved on to Middlesbrough for a fee of £2m to join
up with his former United Assistant Manager Steve McClaren, Jonathan
soon won the backing of the fans with his performances on the pitch
and was named Player of the Year in 2002/03 missing only 45 minutes
of Premiership football during the season and being rewarded for his
performances with a call-up to an England training squad by Sven
Goran Eriksson, the following season saw him increase his Boro
appearance tally to over 100, however at the end of the season he was
deemed surplus to requirements and was allowed to join Albion
following Boro's Summer strengthening spree.
Jonathan affectionately nicknamed 'Jesus' by many fans is a
footballer very comfortable with the ball at his feet and has been a
consistent figure in the first team since his arrival at the club.
