Biography
When
Robert Koren signed for Albion during the January transfer window of
2007, it was considered by many a masterstroke with many clubs
including Manchester City, Norwich City and Leeds United all heavily
linked with the Slovenian international midfielder. He signed an 18
month deal with a years option in the clubs favour.
Robert is a highly rated midfielder who was signed on a Bosman free
transfer from Norwegian side Lillestroem with whom he won the famed
Norwegian "Kniksen" award for Midfielder of the Year in 2006. He was
described by many as the best foreign player in the Norwegian League
and scored 19 goals in 75 games as an influential playmaker for his
club. Koren’s career started in his homeland with NK Radlje before
moving onto NK Dravograd in 1996, he scored 17 goals in just over 120
appearances before moving on again, this time in 2001 to NK Publikum
where in 78 games he hit the net 22 times before moving into
Norwegian football.
Koren scored 10 goals in 26 games in his final season in Norway and
was a goalscorer for Lillestroem in their Intertoto Cup game against
Newcastle United at St James Park in July 2006, to date he has scored
1 goal in 21 International appearances for Slovenia but is still
awaiting his first in an Albion shirt, which given his previous
record cannot be too far away.
