Biography
Middlesbrough -
1981-1991
Anthony Mark Mowbray was born in Saltburn on Friday,
22nd November 1963. He came through the youth ranks
after playing for local clubs Nunthorpe and Grangetown
before starting his professional career with his home
town club Middlesbrough.
Tony made his Middlesbrough debut against Newcastle
United in a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park on Wednesday, 8th
September 1982, aged 18. He became a regular under Boro
manager Malcolm Allison and was handed the captain’s
armband when he was 22-years-old.
In July 1986, Middlesbrough went into Liquidation
suffering from massive debts, he soon became a legend in
Middlesbrough, and is known as ‘the local lad who led
the club from the hell of liquidation back to the top
flight of English football‘. He was also the lynchpin
for which the Middlesbrough team were built around for
more than a decade.
In 1985 and again in 1986 he was voted Middlesbrough’s
Player of the Year. He was ever present during the
1986-87 season when the Teesside club gained promotion
from the Third Division after finishing runner’s-up to
Bournemouth.
In 1987/88 Tony helped Middlesbrough achieve a second
successive promotion which took the club back into the
First Division after wins over Bradford City and Chelsea
in the Play-Offs.
He helped Boro reach the Division Two Play-Off
Semi-Final's in the 1990/91 season but the Teesside club
lost 2-1 to Notts County on aggregate.
In November 1991 he joined Celtic for a fee of
£1,000,000.
During his 10 year stay at Ayresome Park he made 419
appearances scoring 29 goals in all competitions.
Celtic - 1991-1995
Tony made his Bhoys debut in a 2-1 home win over
Aberdeen on Saturday, 9th November 1991, aged
27-years-old.
During his playing career at Celtic, Tony’s wife,
Bernadette Mowbray, died of cancer. In a show of
solidarity, Tony suggested that the Celtic players
perform a huddle immediately before the following match;
the 'huddle' can still be seen before Celtic game's to
date.
The dignified manner in which he handled this tragedy
won him respect from all sides of Scottish football.
In October 1995 Tony moved to Ipswich Town for a fee of
£300,000.
During his stay at Parkhead, he made 78 league
appearances scoring 6 goals in total.
Ipswich Town - 1995-2000
Tony made his Ipswich debut in a 2-1 home defeat to
Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, 7th October 1995,
aged 31-years-old.
Tony became team captain at Ipswich and had many highs
and lows during his 5-year stay at Portman Road.
For three consecutive seasons, 96/97, 97/98 and 98/99
Ipswich managed to reach the Division One Play-Off
Semi-Final's but got no further. However, at the fourth
attempt Ipswich reached the Division One Play-Off Final
at Wembley against Barnsley in May 2000. Tony scored an
equalising goal in the game bringing the scores level at
1-1. Ipswich went on to win the match 4-2 and secured
promotion to the Premiership. This match was the last of
Tony’s playing career.
He made a total of 158 appearances for Ipswich scoring 8
goals in all competitions.
Ipswich Town - First Team Coach & Caretaker Manager
Once his playing days were over, Tony moved into
coaching and was handed a first team coaching role at
Ipswich Town. He later acted as caretaker manager
following the sacking of George Burley on October 11th,
2002 up until the appointment of Joe Royle on October
28th, 2002. Tony took charge of four games, winning one,
drawing one and losing 2.
Hibernian - May 2004 - October 2006
In May 2004 he was appointed manager of Scottish Premier
League side Hibernian replacing the departed Bobby
Williamson. In his first season in charge, he won the
SPL Manager of the Year award after guiding Hibs to 3rd
place in the Scottish Premier League bringing UEFA Cup
football to Easter Road the following season. In his
second season at Easter Road he guided Hibs to 4th
place in the SPL, which marked the first time in
three decades that Hibs had finished in the top four
places of the top flight in consecutive seasons.
Since Mowbray was appointed Hibs have progressed to the
later stages of every domestic cup competition reaching
the Scottish FA Cup Semi-Final and League Cup Quarter
Final in his first season in charge, and reaching the
same stages of the competition the following season.
