Biography
Paul
Robinson is a tough tackling, no nonsense full back who despite
interest from newly promoted Watford committed his future to Albion
in July 2006 by signing a new 3 year deal. He joined the club in
October 2003 for an initial fee of £250,000 from Watford, the club
where he had spent all his career previously.
Robbo went on to make 30 appearances in his first season at The
Hawthorns helping the club back into the Premier League with his
impressive displays at left back and also as an attacking force at
left wingback, his displays in the Great Escape season of 2004/05 saw
him being touted as a future England international but sadly this
failed to materialise, he had previously represented his country at
Under 21 level whilst at Watford, his hometown club for whom he made
over 200 career appearances scoring 9 goals in the process. He was a
product of Watford's youth system, making his debut in the local
derby against Luton Town in October 1996 aged just 17.
As a young player Paul often had on field discipline problems, a side
of his game which saw him subjected to legal action by Port Vale's
Stewart Talbot who suffered a broken leg in a challenge with Paul.
Robbo was sent off 3 times at Watford including during a Play-Off
semi-final against Birmingham City during 1998/99 season, however he
was part of the Hornets side promoted after a victory against Bolton
Wanderers in the Final. He played 32 times for Watford the following
season as they slid out of the Premier League and had established
himself a cult figure with the fans, famed for his punched salute to
the fans after a victory, something he has continued here at The
Hawthorns where he is also a fans favourite due to his never say die
attitude which brought him an injury time equaliser at Villa Park
during the 2005/06 season.
With help from Gianluca Vialli at Watford, Robbo adopted a more
disciplined attitude which has helped improve his game no end and
this was rewarded with a move to Albion for a bargain fee which
angered many Watford fans at the time. Robbo settled into life at The
Hawthorns quickly and he has attracted interest from Premiership
clubs on a number of occasions. Robinson is a vital part of Albion's
plans for a Premiership return which was recognised by his new
contract from the club, he also captains the side in the absence of
regular skipper Curtis Davies.
