Biography Stuart is a centre forward with pace
who was rewarded for his performances at reserve team
level with his first professional contract in January
2006 making his debut in both the FA Cup and Premier
League in the same month. In May of the same year he was
further rewarded for his progress with a call up to the
England Under 19 squad as a replacement for World Cup
bound Theo Walcott making his debut as a substitute in a
2-1 defeat to Belgium. The final reward was to be named
Albion's Young Player Of The Year to cap a memorable six
month spell.
Season 2006/07 started just as well with his first start
and first goal for the club in the Carling Cup victory
at Leyton Orient, his second goal coming in the next
round at home to Cheltenham Town. In November Tony
Mowbray decided that he needed more first team
experience and Stuart joined Bristol Rovers on loan, a
team he has supported since being given a Rovers shirt
as a birthday present at the age of 14, the initial one
month loan was extended but due to injuries and
suspensions Stuart returned to The Hawthorns in January
2007. That same month he was rewarded with a new 18
month contract by Albion and also returned on loan to
Rovers until the end of the season and helped them beat
local rivals Bristol City to gain a place in the final
of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at the Millennium
Stadium.
Stuart gave up his season ticket at Newcastle United to
follow Rovers and was delighted to join up with his hero
Nathan Ellington at Albion. |
