The first season after the Great War was one of Albions most memorable seasons. Albion walked away with the first division title, the only time in the clubs history that they have been crowned champions of England.
The war ended in November 1918 and in the spring of 1919 the four biggest Midlands clubs took part in Midland Victory Tournament, a mini league between Albion, Wolves, Villa and Derby. After a bad start initially with a draw and loss to the Wolves, Albion went onto win the competition, clinching the trophy by beating Villa 5-1 at home and then 3-0 away.
The new football league season
The new football league season started up again on the30th August 1919 with 22 clubs in the division and as shown below, Albion s results throughout the season hardly faultered.The only disappointemnt, if you could call it that, was that Fred Morris, pictured above was Albion top scorer this season, with 37 goals. He was just two goals short at the time of breaking the league record.
Its has been written that the Albion spent the final half hour of the game versus Chelsea in a 4-0 win, trying unsuccessfully to set up Fred Morris for the evasive two goals.
Albion not only won the League in style, but also bagged two records that season. They finished nine points clear of runners up Burnley with a total of 60 points and also scored 104 goals.
