These Pen Portraits came
from the souvenir edition of The evening news and Star, following the semi
final win over Birmingham, taking Albion into the final against Everton.
John
Osborne
Goal keeper,
with lightning reflexes- and a quick mind, as he proved on a TV quiz
programme. From Derbyshire, was a once an England school- boy wing- half,
then turned to goalkeeping in an emergency. Started a career with
Chesterfield and joined Albion in 1967.
Graham Williams
Skipper and left back,
has many Welsh caps to his credit, and is the driving force of the side. A
winger turned full- back, has been with Albion since 1955. He gave up boxing
to become a footballer with Rhyl Athletic. Born Hellan. Age 29
John
Kaye
Left half is a real
bustler who now operates in midfield, and can shock unsuspecting defences.
Began with Goole Town, moved to Scunthorpe in 1960, and joined West Brom in
1963 for £43,000 as a striker. He was leading marksman two seasons ago with
18 goals.
Douglas Fraser
Right-back, combines
flair and stamina for attack with his defensive duties. Was a £25,000
signing from Aberdeen in 1963. Started with the Scottish club as a centre-
forward, and has since played at wing-half and full back.
Bobby
Hope
Inside- left is another
Scot who played in various positions till he found he clicked best at
inside- forward. He was only 16 when he made his League debut eight years
ago, against crapped by Scotland's Under 23's and is the brains behind a
free scoring attack.
John Talbut
Centre half has been a
commanding stopper since he was signed from Burnley last season. Previously
spent nine years at Turf Moor where he made 150 first team appearances and
won nine England under 23's caps.
Dennis Clarke
Reserve is an adaptable
player who has given some striking first team displays this season. Born
Stockton- on- Tees and joined Albion as an apprentice in May, 1963, from
school.
Tony
Brown
Right half was previously
a winger so it is not surprising he favours an attacking game. Oldham- born,
he was born with Manchester United boys before he became an apprentice at
The Hawthorns in 1961.
Ken Stephens
Outside right, is another
discovered as a school boy and snapped up by West Brom. From Bristol, he has
appeared in both inside forward and wing positions.
Ian Collard
Inside right, is another
energetic player who thrives on tough opposition. From South Hetton, he
arrived as an amateur and made his League debut when an apprentice in
September 1964.
Jeff Astle
Centre forward has scored
in every round of the FA Cup this season- and he is leading club marksman
for the second season. From Nottingham, he played with County alongside Tony
Hateley. Joined Albion in September 1964 and is one of the mainsprings of
the club's progress to Wembley.
Clive Clark
Outside left has enjoyed
one of the best seasons of his career, particularly as a marksman. Was on
the Leeds staff for a brief spell, but joined West Brom from Queen's Park
Rangers for £17,500 in January, 1961. Is now one of the fastest and most
prolific goals scoring winners in the business.
