It’s a Funny Old Game!!!

Me and Mr Guest are two fully grown men. For any girls reading this we are also devilishly attractive not to mention funny and very rich! Yet yesterday as we made our way to a pre-season friendly in the summer sun that finally arrived, we were like two small kids the night before Christmas. Lets face it this game meant nothing yet around 500 Baggies journeyed the M5 and risked rather rough looking locals in the Queen Vic (Bristol not Walford) to watch the mighty Albion.

As the players ran out onto the pitch I felt whole again. For the last two months there has been a gaping hole, briefly filled by the Stanley Cup but alas there has been no England failure this summer to occupy my attention. And then the banter starts and I really feel at home once more...

Just to retro it up we are stood on a terrace blinded by the Devon sun, which was just as well given our first half performance. Rovers' Number 11, a quick spray tanned lower league non-entity with spiked hair, gives young Jared the run around and so the hooting starts. Gags about his hair, tan and sexuality start to which he responds admirably and with good humour, I wonder if the response would have been the same had we been the near neighbours from Ashton Gate. And with that football starts once more, it so much more than a game.

We soon find ourselves 2-0 down but much to our amazement the score board read 20-45. Only Albion fans could occupy themselves watching a clock tick by for a whole 45 minutes. Somehow we scramble home 3 goals in the second half to take a lead so fragile that a team of BAA baggage handlers would be able to smash it into a million pieces in a matter of seconds (Grrr can you sense the anger behind that comparison!!!). And sure enough the Bristol goal we expected come along and the game ended 3-3, unless you were still entertaining yourself with the scoreboard, in which case it ended 33-90, but most of us had got bored of that by the end.

The game was poor, shocking in fact but hell... it was great to be back watching the Baggies. Cold turkey over the summer has been hard and my first Baggies hit although disappointing still felt great. The season is nearly here folks and that funny old game will be taking over our lives again and I just can't wait. Bring it on promotion, play offs or mid-table disappointment, bring it on now I just can't wait anymore!!!
